Kamala Harris selected Tim Walz as her running mate

On August 6, 2024, current Vice President Kamala Harris announced that her presidential campaign would include Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Walz has a track record that gives us some insights into how a potential Harris/Walz administration might govern on immigration matters.

  • Walz has previously stated that immigration is part of the “fabric” of life in Minnesota. Compare that with JD Vance’s desire to deport millions of immigrants.

  • In 2023, Walz expanded driver’s license eligibility in Minnesota to include immigrants, regardless of their status, following 18 other states and Washington, D.C.

  • Walz believes federal law enforcement officials have the responsibility for enforcing immigration law, rather than state or local officials.

  • While in Congress, Walz supported expansion of Temporary Protected Status.

Harris also has an extensive record on immigration:

  • Harris has long stated her support for a bipartisan border security bill.

  • As VP, Harris was tasked with overseeing an attempt to address the root causes of the immigration crisis from Central American nations including El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

  • Recently, under the Biden/Harris administration, border encounters between ports of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border have dropped to levels lower than 2019 before the pandemic crunched crossings.

In the coming months, we will certainly learn more about the Harris/Walz ticket in comparison to the Trump/Vance ticket, and hope to keep you informed going forward.
